One of Madagascar’s most fascinating natural areas is located on an ascending ledge in the island’s north-western corner and appears quite unspectacular at first sight. In a dry, undulating and treeless area of the fourth biggest island and second biggest island state after Indonesia, Ankarafantsika is towering approximately 250m above the surrounding landscape. Along Madagascar´s eastcoast are the remainders of rainforests that used to cover the whole east flank of the island´s central highlands. The humid clouds coming from the Indian Ocean supply the steep slopes with huge amounts of rain along with devastating Cyclones, which are regularily making a havoc of parts of the island in the time between December and March.
