A few kilometres north of Dessie, you get to Hayk, a bland small town stretching along the road. But one or two kilometres from the town centre, one can find the eponymous lake on an altitude of 2.000 m amidst a lush mountain scenery that couldn´t be more picturesque. The lake is 85 m deep with turquoise water shining in the sunlight, and the hilly landscape around is dominated by farmland with fields, pastures and plantations. Hidden on a peninsula, there is the monastery of Hayk Istafanos, one of the oldest and most influential in the country. Referring to various founding myths, it had been established between the 7th and the 9th century. It is forbidden for women to enter the monastery compound, but in the 13th century, the nunnery of Margebeta Giyorgis had been founded in the direct vicinity of Hayk Istafanos on the same peninsula. Hayk means lake, and it is very likely that the actual name of the place got lost over the centuries so that only Hayk survived as a name.

Hayk liegt nur wenige Kilometer nördlich von Dessie und ist eine relativ gesichtslose Kleinstadt, die sich direkt entlang der Straße erstreckt. Nur ein, zwei Kilometer von dieser entfernt liegt auf einer Höhe von gut 2.000 Metern allerdings der gleichnamige See, eingebettet in eine malerische Berglandschaft, die idyllischer nicht sein könnte. Das bis zu 85 Meter tiefe Wasser strahlt im Sonnenlicht türkisfarben, und am Ufer erstreckt sich eine pittoreske Kulturlandschaft aus Feldern, Weiden und Plantagen. Auf einer Halbinsel befindet sich außerdem das Kloster Hayk Istafanos, das eines der ältesten und einflussreichsten im ganzen Land ist und verschiedenen Gründungsmythen zufolge irgendwann zwischen dem 7. und dem 9. Jahrhundert gegründet worden war. Der Zutritt zum Kloster ist Frauen untersagt, aber im 13. Jahrhundert wurde in direkter Nachbarschaft auch noch das Nonnenkloster Margebeta Giyorgis errichtet. Hayk bedeutet See, und vermutlich ist der tatsächliche Name des Ortes über die Zeiten verlorengegangen, so dass bloß Hayk als Bezeichnung überdauert hat. Weiterlesen →
