On the outskirts of Fort Portal, Toro Botanical Gardens occupies 50 ha as demonstration gardens where various plants are conserved, like medicinal plants, spices, fruits, herbs, shrubs and trees, among them also hardwood species. Main goal of this project founded in 2001 is to raise awareness for the vegetation of the Albertine Rift Valley. Along Madagascar´s eastcoast are the remainders of rainforests that used to cover the whole east flank of the island´s central highlands. The humid clouds coming from the Indian Ocean supply the steep slopes with huge amounts of rain along with devastating Cyclones, which are regularily making a havoc of parts of the island in the time between December and March.
