On the outskirts of Fort Portal, Toro Botanical Gardens occupies 50 ha as demonstration gardens where various plants are conserved, like medicinal plants, spices, fruits, herbs, shrubs and trees, among them also hardwood species. Main goal of this project founded in 2001 is to raise awareness for the vegetation of the Albertine Rift Valley. In addition, this is the perfect place for bird nerds with a broad variety of forest and woodland species.
After having visited Toro Botanical Gardens in 2012, it was very interesting to see what has changed over the course of the last five years. And the main change was, that they have added a pond. There are still three trails leading visitors through gardens, forests and seasonal swamps. You can have look at the Arboretum or the tree nursery or climb up to a “tree house”, a platform with excellent views over the valley and the chance to spot birds up there between the branches.
Am Rande von Fort Portal erstrecken sich über 50 Hektar die Toro Botanical Gardens, Demonstrationsgärten, wo verschiedene Pflanzenarten geschützt werden, von medizinischen Pflanzen über Gewürzpflanzen, Früchte, Kräuter und Büsche bis hin zu verschiedenen Baumarten, darunter auch Hartholz-Arten. Das Ziel des 2001 begonnenen Projekts ist, das Bewusstsein für einzigartige Vegetation des Rift Valley zu schärfen. Außerdem ist es der ideale Ort für Vogel-Enthusiasten, die dort viele Wald- und Buschlandarten vorfinden.
Nachdem wir die Toro Botanical Gardens schon 2012 besucht hatten, war es natürlich äußerst interessant zu sehen, was sich in den vergangenen fünf Jahren alles verändert hat. Und die Hauptveränderung war, dass es nun einen Teich gibt. Die Besucher können immer noch auf drei Pfaden das Gebiet mit verschiedenen Gärten, Wäldern und saisonalen Sümpfen erkunden. Man kann ein Arboretum und eine Baumschule besuchen oder das „Baumhaus“ erklimmen, eine Plattform, von der aus man einen herrlichen Blick über ein Tal genießt und gute Chancen auf Vogelbeobachtungen zwischen den Ästen hat.
